Johnson Winter & Slattery (JWS) has advised Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) on its acquisition of Gold Coast craft beer business, Balter Brewing Co.
Under the agreement, CUB acquired the company which owns the Balter craft beer business and operates a brewery in Currumbin, Gold Coast. The Balter craft beer business was established in 2016 by co-founders including Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Josh Kerr and Bede Durbidge. Balter is now one of the fastest-growing craft beer brands in Australia, with its XPA having won the Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers the last two years.
JWS advised on all aspects of this transaction with the team led by Corporate Partner Sophia Bobeff, supported by Associates Will Mason, Claudia Scardigno and Rebecca Proudman. Partner Stewart Grieve advised on the tax elements of this transaction along with Special Counsels Julian Wan and Kathryn Bertram.
Sophia Bobeff said the firm was proud to support CUB on another strategic transaction.
“Craft beers are continuing to grow in popularity in Australia. CUB has developed a ‘recipe for success’ by nurturing local craft beers and supporting their expansion through capital investment and access to an extensive distribution network that CUB can offer. We are proud to again support CUB on another significant transaction.”
