Johnson Winter & Slattery’s environment and planning team recently co-acted for Greenspot, a joint venture between the owners of Borg and Bettergrow, in its acquisition of the Wallerawang coal-fired power station from EnergyAustralia.
Wallerawang power station is located just over 150 km west of Sydney and 14 km northwest of Lithgow in NSW. The Power Station opened in 1957 and remained an active coal fired power station until 2014.
Following the acquisition of the 450 hectare site, Greenspot proposes to carry out an extensive decommissioning, demolition and rehabilitation (DDR) program with plans to repurpose the site, and associated buffer lands, into an industrial facility. The facility will be fit for a variety of uses, including manufacturing and protected cropping food production businesses.
The purchase of the Wallerawang power station was a complex transaction involving multiple parties and numerous legal documents requiring negotiations. The purchase of the site by Greenspot provides an opportunity for the site to be used for a range of job-creating uses going forward, thereby generating significant economic activity in the local area and the broader region.
Johnson Winter & Slattery Partner Samantha Daly led this transaction with support from Associate Jemma Potezny.
Samantha Daly said: “As a number of coal fired power stations near the end of their life in NSW, and across the country, the repurposing of the Wallerawang power station site by Greenspot is likely to gain significant attention from a number of stakeholders.
We are thrilled to have assisted with the acquisition of the site by Greenspot and look forward to continuing to support the project as it moves into the demolition and repurposing stages.”
Johnson Winter & Slattery co-acted on this transaction alongside Thomson Geer.
